Twenty Second Week

Day 148. 1/26/15

Rode to work and Omni for lunch at 1913.  After arriving home at the day's end I promptly returned to work to fetch the forgotten keys.

Day 149

Rode to work but later drove to Mundells.  River's crazy.

Day 150

Rode to work, home to start laundry, then back to work.  After hit up Plat 99 with Paul F.  Excellent bar to watch the sunset over the city!  Ended up in Broadripple that night for Yonder Mountain String Band.  Rode to The Vogue with a different Paul and Kelley.

Meet the Fleet

Day 147, 1/25/15

Now that they are all back to operational, it's time to reintroduce you to the members of our team.

Built in January '85, this League model Fuji was presumably made in Singapore.  Ichiro, Japanese for "first son", has an aftermarket saddle and rims.  Procured in Spring 2010 in Fort Wayne, IN, he has moved with me to Nashville, Muncie, and Indianapolis.
Favorite rides: Hilly Hundred and White River Greenway.

This 2009 Tommaso Augusta Track bike was a graduation present to myself in May 2013.  Research indicates these cycles are designed in Italy and made in Colorado.  These are fairly inexpensive 'bikesdirect' type of ride, but riding fixed has been a fun and new experience.  Tom has aftermarket bullhorn bars, Brooks saddle, and deep V rims.  He has been referred to as "sexy."
Favorite rides: Monon Trail to Broadripple and navigating downtown traffic.

This 2014 Specialized Rockhopper 29er has everything I was looking for in a MTB.  Hard tail, disc brakes, and 29 inch rims.  The flat black finish hides even the Specialized markings.  Bruce was bought in late May 2014 and has an affinity for vigilante justice.  His only aftermarket addition is a rear rack compatible with disc brakes.
Favorite rides: anything in the snow and Brown County trails.

Information on the Bianchi has proven difficult to locate.  The seller stated it was a 2002 produced in Italy, I found a 2001 to be the best match.  This TIG welded, double butted frame is rounded out with a carbon form and Campagnolo Veloce components.  Originally sold for $1,500.  The only after market addition is a Rolls saddle.
Favorite Rides: Fast

Today was a post-midnight apartment ride.  Which means I did not ride today.  It was raining, and additional excuses.  Best to ride in the morning on the weekends.

Prodigal Son

Day 146, 1/24/15

The triumphant return of Ichiro!  Replaced a tube, aired up tires, and dusted off the seat.  Took him to the City Market where Paul helped Alana and I make bee's wax candles.  Yes, it was a children's activity, but we all enjoyed the tactile start to the day.

Later I road with Pat and his Uncle up to Broadripple Brew Pub.  Uncle Mark, who was in town from Naples, FL, is a cyclist who aligns quite well with my own cycling beliefs and philosophies.

Indianapolis, IN January 24th 2015
Ichiro's story is a long and interesting (at least to me) one.  I bought him in the Spring of 2010 after a Trek I owned only shortly was stolen from outside the Academy.  While checking out a craigslist add in Fort Wayne, I was referred to a friend of the seller who had "a garage full of stuff".  I headed to Main St. to find it was closer to a barn and closer to BRIMMING!  I was not yet bike geeked so I didn't realize how close to heaven I was.
Then nameless, the whip served me well throughout my remaining three years in Muncie carrying me through countless commutes, 2 Hilly Hundreds, and a 90+ mile trek from Muncie to FW just for fun.

Muncie, IN March, 2013
Once I moved to Indy in May 2013 I was pedal obsessed.  At this point I had procured Tom as a graduation present to myself, but was still iffy on fixed gear riding and preferred the familiar comfort of the 1984 baby blue Fuji.  It was in his saddle that I first explored the city and its offerings.

Cranksgiving, Indianapolis, IN.  November 2013
On May 31st, 2014, I drove out to Bob’s with the intent of buying a MTB.  Bob, a craiglist vender, had a garage full of bikes similar to the Main St. barn.  I rode a number of bikes and settled on an all-black Specialized 29er hard tail.  Bruce.  I was packed to leave town for the night so instead of heading home and chaining the new to the old in my building’s basement, I mounted the behemoth and headed North to show off my new ride.  This turned out to be a great decision because when I returned home that Sunday the Fuji was gone and the lock dangled broken from the eyelet stay.

Self-documentation of cycle chained in basement.
As the weather was getting warmer the building’s exterior doors swelled and didn’t always latch shut.  Someone had let themselves in and simply broke the inadequate and aged lock, presumably with their hands.

I did due diligence, making neighbors aware and informing my landlord who then put in a camera system.  I filed a police report and posted a $100 reward along with descriptions and photos online.  These efforts were all for not.  However, it wasn’t long before friends and co-workers started reporting seeing my bike on Delaware and Mass Ave.

I had a voicemail from Courtney who thought she saw it heading North on Delaware.  Kurt sent me a text when he passed it on Mass Ave.  Both were familiar enough with the bike and reported the same middle-aged black man pushing the pedals which helped corroborate their sitings.  One night, Kayla and I both spotted him separately.  She was running errands and I was riding pedicabs.  We both gave chase, called the cops, etc. to no avail.  The police were especially not helpful telling me “we can’t really do anything unless you’re there with him.”
“So I should confront him before calling?” I asked.
“Well, we don’t really want you to do that either,” dispatch responded.
Thanks for precisely nothing IMPD.

Paul and Misty followed him on separate occasions back to 19th Street.  Paul was in an auto and only caught a glimpse, while Misty pursued him from Mass Ave on her bike.

Hers is my favorite story as she was the bravest of friends.  The perp stopped around 19th and Bellefontaine and she approached him posing as a Michigan transplant looking for housing options.

“I don’t think you’d want to live in this hood,” he told her.
Very quickly she revealed herself.  “Actually, a friend had his bike stolen recently and I believe yours is what was taken.”
He told her he bought the bike off a homeless guy wrote down his name and number on an old receipt.

I now had a name.  Jay.  The number, not surprisingly, was not answered.
“This number has a voice mailbox that has not been set up yet.  Goodbye.”

Misty felt foolish for not taking further action, but I was grateful for her courage and tenacity.  She, like many of my better friends, believe first that people are good and honest.  Who knows, she may even be right.

While all of these sitings, phone calls, and chases gave me hope, it wasn’t until after work on July 15th that I tracked Jay down.  I took my newly purchased 2002 Bianchi up Mass Ave and spotted him almost immediately.  Our confrontation was heated and first but quickly cooled off.  Jay told me he paid $50 for the bike and just wanted his money back.  Knowing the bike was rightfully mine, I hesitated to call the less-than-helpful police and instead decided to give him the money.  We road together to the bank as I had no cash on me.  He crossed paths with a friend he chastised him for being out of contact.  He explained he dropped his phone in a puddle and it had been out of commission.  Perhaps this explained why there was no answer when I called.

Jay asked if we could ride up to 19th St. so he wouldn’t have to walk and I trusted him enough to oblige.  He started opening up to me explaining that he recently went through a divorce and asked that I call him John.  Jay is his “street name”.

I had people over that night to watch the MLB All-Star game, but baseball took a backseat to the repeated telling of the story.  As each friend arrived, the story was retold with more and more detail and enthusiasm.

Typically, I am one to embellish and elaborate far beyond what is factual for the purpose of entertainment.  But this story needs no exaggeration.  I am still undecided if Jay stole my bike or bought it off someone, but one thing’s for sure, John did not steal my bike.  John is a gentle, friendly, and amiable guy who was glad to return my bike.

“I can tell I made your day,” he said as we waited in line at the bank.

I was grinning like an idiot, and he was right.

Silver Linings

Day 143, 1/21/15

Work has been pretty awful this week for a few reasons.  I am grateful for the silver linings that helped make it bearable.
Today I rode Tom to work and later to Paul's.  We made arrangements to do dinner at the Sinking Ship.  They had a hot wing eating contest co-sponsored by Lava Lips, a neighboring "hot sauce" bar.  Michael, the owner, explained to me that you can carry in your own food and drink and try hot sauces.  The idea is less ridiculous than I originally thought!
Photo taken from wherevent.com
The competition involved 10 brave men who raced to eat their 6 [whole] wings first.  This was made more difficult by being coated in some pretty rancid sauce.  I snagged a sample from an extra competition plate and regretted doing so!  Anything that dark color of red is dangerous.

I ordered their wings and enjoyed a more mild sauce.  The wings were excellent, their blue cheese was shit.  KSR has them beat no contest.

Day 144

Rode to work today.  In the afternoon took the White River Trail to Indy Met for the mentor session.  It was a lot of fun to meet the guys.  We played some of my favorite icebreakers and closed out the hour chatting about life, school, and jobs.  I really enjoyed getting to 'lead' the event.  While the extra responsibilities at work are time consuming and stressful, they are rewarding as well.

Day 145

Rode to work, home for lunch then back.  Missed out on the left overs from the provost advisory board meeting, but I had a bunch of spinach about to turn anyway.
Later I rode up to the Hostel to pick up Kelley.  The plan was to ride downtown and then to Mundell's for their birthday party.  The plan changed when Kelley bailed on the ride and instead waited for Paul to head to the party.  I was a bit behind schedule so I decided to drive out to Irvington.  The party was very much fun!

Back in the Saddle

Day 136, 1/14/15

Road to work and then to Bankerslife Fieldhouse to meet with the director of their food service partner.  Riding saved me parking fees and a pretty decent walk from the garage.  Pretty sure it was faster overall.

After work I drove to the Hostel for their story telling night.  Andy and Lyndsey shared their canoe story and I got to watch River while they did it.  I think we are buddies now, although it didn't appear he objects to much of anything.
The story telling stage is set.  Photo by Indy Hostel

Day 137

Out the door before 7am to get my poster from Lucas Oil!  I circumvented the line of cars and was waved on by a nice gentleman at the entrance ramp.  I'm not sure he knew I was going to hop in line, but no one complained.  I think they felt bad for me.  WTHR interviewed me and I rambled sillily.
After speaking with the reporter who do I see, but Pat!  He waited in line for over a half hour for his poster and said he was cursing the idiot cyclist.  Then he realized it was me and presumably cursed even more.

Road Block

Day 133, 1/11/15

Got back from an impromptu, and intensely fun, visit to Louisville.  Eating at the Seelbach Hotel was fantastic and Garage Bar was a good introduction to NuLu.

Getting home Sunday I drove straight tot he Colts game at Blakely's.  By the time the Colts won the ice storm was upon us.  I fell asleep on the couch without riding and when I woke, rolled across my living room, foyer, and into the bedroom on Tom.  It was definitely post midnight which means this is the first day I did not pedal.  I knew this was a strong possibility going into the challenge.  Back in the saddle tomorrow.

Day 134

Road to work and home.  It was pretty freaking cold!

Day 135

Road to work in the dark, home in the dark.  Then vegged for the night.  Pat dropped off my phone after the Pacers game.

19th Weekend

Day 131, 1/9/15

Two pedal strokes on y way home from work I broke a chain AGAIN!  Frustrated, I decided to leave it to the professionals and walked with Bruce down to BGI Bike Hub.  Even though I expressed the problem was with the drivetrain as oppose to the chain, they simply replaced the broken link with a quick link and $10 later I was on my way.  Not 100 yards down the road it happened again (3rd time in 3 days).  We returned to the shop and the actual problem was presumably located.  The outer chainring had a slight bend which was catching the chain when it was in the middle chainring.

I maintain the issue may be that I am far too strong for traditional strength bicycle chains.

Day 132

Saturday morning ride to Starbucks for coffee and internet.  While drinking I watched work crews take the lights of Monument Circle and Pot Belly delivery bikes struggle with their giant bags of sammies.

Delivery riders have some sweet bikes, but once you load two over-sized bags on their back it's easy to topple.  That's the show I got this morning.  Maybe if his seat had a more appropriate angle he wouldn't fall so often.

Polar Vortex 2.0

Day 128, 1/6/15

The fresh snow on the ground kept me from sleeping last night.  It was like new LED street lights were installed directly outside my windows.  The weather caused me to ride Bruce to work.  Around 6pm on my way home the sky was such a brilliant red that I raced to White River State Park to get a better view.  As is typical, the color's peek was during my ride, but I still caught a bit of it.

10 minutes earlier, the entire sky was a vibrant red.
Day 129

Rode Bruce to work again today.  It was very cold.

After work I met family on Mass Ave for window shopping and dinner.  They were going to see "Dancing With the Stars", I was going home to shiver in my apartment.

Got a text later that night from our campus president because there was an issue with the building.  Bruce and I went to check it out and MacGyver a solution.
Ryon was watching us on the security cameras.  A little too Orwellian for my comfort.  You can see Bruce waiting outside in the red circle.

Day 130

Rode to work again today.  A student thought he saw me riding on the news last night.  Admittingly, it did look like me, but sadly it was a doppelganger.

Broke a chain on the MTB for the 3rd (possibly 4th) time.  I am am beginning to thing there is something causing this other than torque topping pythons for legs.  There could be irregularities on the drivetrain or simply a bad chain (I bought on Amazon).

Spent roughly 45 minutes fixing the chain.  Really 15 minutes fixing it and 30 trying to loosen stiff links.

Planned on riding to Ben's new place last night to hang with him and Loreal when they finished class, but I fell asleep on the couch and my phone turned itself off.  Probably for the best considering the conditions that ride would entail!

Playoffs?!

Day 126, 1/4/15

Rode downtown to fetch coffee and take in some of the playoff atmosphere.  Checked out Touchdown Town, Georgia Street, and the Slippery Noodle.  Colts won and Bengals fans remain some of the worst dressed in the league.
Saw plenty of Bengals fans sporting these monstrosities.
Touchdown Town @ 11am 1/4/15

Day 127

Rode to work.  Welcome Winter.

Commence MMXV

Day 123, January 1st, 2015

Got home from Louisville and took a ride to Marsh.  Rented Land Ho!  Not great, but entertaining enough.  It served the purpose of recovering from the previous night.

Day 124

Woke early and walked to work to fetch computer.  Then got bike and rode around a bit.  Returned the DVD, picked up a box from the post office, etc.

In the evening I rode to Starbucks to type this.  Going out for first Friday tonight.

Day 125

Polar Bear Pedal. Wet.  Cold.  But a great turn out!  Tom got soaked.
Cyclists completing the route.  Photographed from inside a warm Starbucks.
More and more FAT bikes are being seen at these things.  Some were expecting snow.

Though I wasn't able to attend, my brother sent me some photos of his ski trip to Crystal Mountain near Traverse City.  There was a 50k fat bike race!
